SHILLONG: The Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organization (CoMSO) will file a petition before the Supreme Court against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), 2019 on January 16.

“We will file a petition against the CAA before the Supreme Court on January 16,” chairman of CoMSO Robertjune Kharjahrin said on Tuesday.

The CoMSO in its meeting held last week has decided to seek the immediate scrapping of the CAA, which seeks to provide citizenship to non-Muslim refugees from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

“With or without ILP, we will continue to protest against the CAA till it is scrapped or declared as unconstitutional,” Kharjahrin had said after the meeting.

Meanwhile, the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC), which is spearheading the CoMSO, will also organize a public meeting to oppose the CAA and to demand implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Meghalaya.

The meeting will be held at Umdohlun market on January 16.
