SHILLONG: The Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organization (CoMSO) has demanded the arrest of troublemakers, who are responsible for the clash that led to several persons injured during the protest rally held in front of the Raj Bhavan.

“We urge the police to arrest the troublemakers for taking advantage of the situation which has led to the clash,” chairman of the confederation Robertjune Kharjahrin told reporters after visiting the injured persons at the Shillong civil hospital on Saturday.

He said the objective of the confederation was to hold a peaceful rally in order to oppose the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 and demand immediate introduction of the Inner Line Permit (ILP).

Kharjahrin also added the police would not have responded had they were not provoked by such troublemakers.

The chairman also thanked the Shillong civil hospital for giving immediate treatment to the injured people. “We also appeal to the people who were injured not to lose hope as we are confident that we will achieve our demand for ILP to protect the state,” he said.

A rally by a crowd of nearly a lakh people on Friday turned ugly as protesters and the police clashed in front of the Raj Bhavan forcing the police to resort to lathi charge and firing tear gas leaving several persons including police personnel injured in the clashes.

A fire truck parked a few meters away from the main entrance of the Raj Bhavan was also vandalised while another car belonging to the Nehru Yuva Kendra, parked about 200 meters from the Raj Bhavan was set on fire.

The strong crowds had tried to storm the Raj Bhavan and in the melee many were caught forcing the police to resort to lathi charge and firing several rounds of tear gases to disperse them.
