Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has sought a report into the alleged regrouping of the disbanded Garo militant outfit – Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA).

“Within a couple of days, we will be calling and taking an internal kind of an assessment on the situation,” Sangma told reporters on Tuesday.

He however refused to comment any further on the issue and said, “It is an internal report and right now I have not seen a copy of the report yet.”

According to him, these are assessments that are being made from time to time by different levels and are part of the exercises which are normally done.

When asked, the chief minister said the government is concerned but it is not that “we are worried or anything” adding “You must understand that as a government we received a lot of Intel and when the Intel comes in we have to filter up the Intel and see which one has got any kind of actual weightage or not so these procedures are very complicated.”

He further added that the government however is not taking anything lightly in this regard.

The internal input had claimed that over 500 youths from various districts of Garo Hills had joined the outfit and had been sent to countries like Myanmar and in Nagaland for basic training. It also claimed that various big businessmen, who were close associates of the GNLA earlier, were aiding the outfit to regroup.
