CM Sarma, Railway Minister Vaishnaw discuss rail expansion to turn Assam into logistics hub

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday met Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in New Delhi to discuss long-term strategies for eliminating legacy transport bottlenecks and accelerating rail infrastructure development in the state.
The meeting, held at Rail Bhawan, focused on a multi-pronged approach to modernize Assam’s railway network—including infrastructure expansion, technology upgrades, data integration, and workflow optimization—all aimed at transforming the state into a major logistics hub for the Northeast.
Vaishnaw acknowledged the importance of strengthening rail connectivity in the region, noting that expansion and modernization of existing lines would play a key role in unlocking Assam’s economic potential.
“Always a pleasure to meet Hon’ble Minister Shri @AshwiniVaishnaw Ji,” Sarma posted on X (formerly Twitter) after the meeting. “Today we spoke at length on several efforts to mitigate legacy transport bottlenecks and expand Assam’s rail infrastructure. These are crucial check marks as we plan to build a logistics hub in the state.”
The hour-long meeting was attended by senior Assam officials including Chief Secretary Ravi Kota, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister K.K. Dwivedi, and Resident Commissioner Kavitha Padmanabhan.
The discussion aligns with the state government’s broader vision to streamline freight movement, improve passenger services, and boost economic connectivity within Assam and with the rest of India.
