Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma marked World Environment Day 2025 by planting a tree at Ummir village in New Shillong Township and calling for personal responsibility in protecting the environment.

In his address, he urged citizens to act now to tackle ecological degradation, citing examples from West Khasi Hills and Mairang. “Don’t ask what you can do—ask what you will do today,” he said, encouraging simple daily actions like saving electricity and managing waste properly.

He also launched Mission Clean Shillong 2027, a campaign aimed at making Shillong one of India’s cleanest cities ahead of the National Games 2027. The CM stressed that the mission’s success depends on public participation—from youth and students to institutions and traditional leaders.

Highlighting the state’s commitment to sustainability, Sangma said over 1.84 crore saplings have been planted in the past five years, with another 42,000 hectares targeted in the next phase. He lauded the GREEN Meghalaya+ initiative, which has helped protect over 52,000 hectares of forest through community efforts, aligning with Meghalaya’s sacred grove tradition.

The Chief Minister also released two key policy documents—Mission Clean Shillong 2027 and Building a Climate Resilient Green Economy—as part of Meghalaya Vision 2032.

The event recognised outstanding contributions through the GREEN Meghalaya+ and MegLIFE Awards. Awardees from across sectors expressed happiness and pride, saying the recognition would inspire them to do more.
