CM Conrad K. Sangma meets Nokma representatives, addresses GHADC crisis

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Friday met with Nokma representatives from across the Garo Hills, led by GSU President Tengsak Momin.
At the outset, the Chief Minister expressed his gratitude to the leaders and civil society organisations for attending the meeting to discuss pressing issues, particularly the ongoing crisis in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC).
He highlighted the council’s severe financial instability, warning that without intervention, the situation could escalate further. “GHADC’s revenue collections this year are just around Rs 25 crore, whereas salary expenditures alone amount to Rs 70 crore, creating a significant gap. The state government has stepped in only to bring financial reforms and stability to the council,” he said.
Reiterating that the state government has no authority over GHADC’s operations, Sangma clarified, “Our offer to take over GHADC employees’ salaries from November 1, 2025, is a bailout measure aimed solely at ensuring employee welfare and supporting financial reforms.”
He further outlined that the reform measures will include establishing Service Rules for the councils, implementing a Procurement Policy, and rationalising and re-appropriating employees, all aimed at stabilising the council’s financial system.
In a separate engagement, the Chief Minister, who also represents 51-South Tura, conducted a locality visit to Boldak A’ Ding L.P. School in Tura, West Garo Hills. During the visit, he interacted with community members and assured them of the government’s commitment to addressing local issues and strengthening grassroots development. Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills, Vibhor Aggarwal, IAS, was also present. The event saw active participation from residents, local leaders, and community representatives.
