Chowna Mein leads Grand Maha Sangken Festival at Golden Pagoda, blends spirituality with cultural diplomacy

The International Maha Sangken Festival began in full splendor at the Golden Pagoda (Kongmu Kham) in Namsai on Monday, with Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein leading the celebrations. The three-day event, rooted in tradition and spirituality, drew thousands from the Tai-Khamti community and beyond, including international tourists and dignitaries.
The festival opened with the spiritually symbolic “Descent of Lord Buddha to Earth at Dawn,” led by Mein at the Golden Pagoda and MLA Chau Zingnu Namchoom at Parayatti Sasana Vihara. A ceremonial procession followed, creating a serene yet festive atmosphere as it moved from the Entry Gate to the Festival Stage.
Extending Sangken greetings, Mein explained the festival’s significance. “We believe Lord Buddha descends to Earth during Sangken. We bathe his idol with clean water as a mark of reverence,” he said.
The day also featured traditional rituals such as washing the feet of monks, symbolizing humility and the seeking of blessings. Families continued the tradition in the evening by washing the feet of elders in a touching display of respect and gratitude.
Mein described Sangken as both sacred and seasonal. “It’s a celebration of spring, of renewal. Pouring water on one another washes away sins and brings good health and prosperity,” he said.
Cultural performances from Thai troupes, along with traditional Sangken dances by the local community, added vibrance to the event, showcasing the rich Tai-Khamti heritage. Mein used the occasion to highlight the cultural and economic potential of the festival.
“Maha Sangken is not just a spiritual gathering—it’s an opportunity to promote tourism through our heritage. With growing international interest, we’ve decided to host the celebration here annually at the Golden Pagoda to boost tourism in Arunachal Pradesh,” he said.
The event saw the participation of several dignitaries including Ministers Ojing Tasing and Dasanglu Pul, MLAs Puinnyo Apum, Oni Panyang, Tapi Darang, and officials from Namsai and Tezu.
Adding to the festival’s global appeal, Italian Ambassador to India, Antonio Enrico Bartoli, attended the event on Tuesday with his daughter Sofia Bartoli and delegation member Kapil Kumria, underscoring the international interest in Arunachal Pradesh’s cultural landscape.
