Chinese diplomats visit Royal Global University, push for stronger India-China educational ties

A delegation from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in India visited The Assam Royal Global University (RGU) on Thursday to explore avenues of academic and cultural collaboration under the ongoing Diplomats on Campus programme.
The five-member delegation—led by Counsellor Yang Xiuhua and including First Secretary Zhang Hailin, Third Secretary Fang Bin, Attaché Dai Zerui, and Attaché Li Qinyan—held discussions with RGU Vice-Chancellor Prof. A.K. Buragohain, senior university officials, and later interacted with students.
Welcoming the diplomats, Prof. Buragohain stressed the importance of people-to-people contact, suggesting student exchange programmes, collaborative research, and cultural immersion opportunities with Chinese universities.
Counsellor Yang Xiuhua emphasised education as a bridge between India and China, saying: “Collaboration can be developed step by step—first by establishing relationships between institutions, then by connecting RGU with Chinese universities, and finally by signing MoUs to formalise exchanges.”
He noted that while over one million Chinese students’ study abroad, only a handful pursue education in India due to visa challenges. In contrast, India has become the fourth largest source of students in China, with the Chinese Government annually offering scholarships to Indian students.
Highlighting recent progress, Xiuhua said that in 2020 alone, 54 MoUs were signed between Indian and Chinese universities. He added, “The ice between India-China relations is melting with the efforts of the Indian Prime Minister and Chinese President. Considering this, there are new opportunities for collaboration. We always encourage Chinese students to study in India.”
He also suggested the possibility of an Indian education exhibition in China and mentioned that the Chinese Ministry of Education is working on expanding scholarships for international students, with India as a potential beneficiary.
Prof. Buragohain responded by noting that RGU itself offers scholarships to international students and expressed interest in joint research and skill-based education with Chinese universities.
During the interactive session with students, the diplomats provided insights into China’s education system, highlighted Study-in-China opportunities, and responded to queries about scholarships and cultural exchanges. The exchange, they said, was aimed at broadening perspectives and strengthening India-China understanding through education.
