The Ministry for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) has sanctioned Rs 126 crore for the construction of the Borghat-Sonapur road along the Indo-Bangla border in East Jaintia Hills District.

This was informed by the Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong to a delegation of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the four border villages – Huroi, Hingaria, Lahelein and Lejri – during a meeting held here on Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, adviser of the JAC Kynjaimon Amse said, “He (Tynsong) has informed us that the central government has sanctioned Rs 126 crore for the construction of the Borghat-Sonapur road with a distance of 40 kilometers.”

He said the deputy chief minister also informed that the last date for submission of tender is on March 15 while assuring that he would lay the foundation stone in the month of April.

“On behalf of the over 25,000 plus population of the border villages, we expressed our gratitude to the government for its intervention on this matter which has been lying pending for the past seven years now,” Amse said.

He informed that the people have been facing hardships due to the bad condition of the road coupled with no electricity, PHC and no mobile connectivity and due to geographical location, people residing in these four villages solely rely on Bangladesh for their daily requirements.

“Once the road is constructed, we are confident that all other avenues mobile connectivity, health care and other developments will come,” he added.

On December 15, last year, the Meghalaya High Court had asked the state government to obtain funds for commencing the work of metaling the Borghat-Sonapur road.

When asked, Amse said that they will inform the High Court on this new development. “We hope sooner or later the long pending aspirations of the people in regards to the road will see the light of day,” he said.
