On the occasion of World Heritage Day, the Meghalaya Basin Management Agency (MBMA), in collaboration with Syrwet U Barim and North East Zone ICOMOS India, hosted a vibrant ‘Mariang Festival’ in Pyrnai village, Pynursla Block, East Khasi Hills district, Meghalaya on Saturday.

The event brought together enthusiasts, tourists, and the local community to celebrate the cultural and historical treasures of Meghalaya. Also present at the festival were representatives of ICOMOS India, North East Zone.

Participants were treated to an immersive ‘Heritage Walk’ experience, delving deep into the profound connection between the people and the landscape, epitomized by the renowned Living Root Bridges.

These bridges stand as living testaments to the harmonious coexistence of humans and nature, embodying centuries-old traditions and wisdom.

Throughout the day, attendees were enthralled by traditional performances of song and dance by indigenous artists, offering a glimpse into the rich cultural tapestry of Meghalaya. Exhibitions showcasing indigenous crafts and traditional attire provided insights into the craftsmanship and creativity of the local artisans, while culinary enthusiasts indulged in authentic delicacies, savoring the flavors of heritage cuisine.

In addition to cultural showcases, the event featured traditional games such as Sum Khnam, Maw Poin, and Tan Lang Nob, adding an element of joy and camaraderie to the festivities.

This year’s celebration of World Heritage Day aligned with the theme, “Disasters & Conflicts through the Lens of the Venice Charter’, highlighting the resilience of Meghalaya’s heritage in the face of challenges.

Iconic landmarks like the Living Root Bridge (Jingkieng Jri / Lyu Chrai) served as poignant reminders of the inseparable bond between humans, nature, and culture, echoing the spirit of preservation and appreciation.
