DCA Minister, Lahkmen Rymbui has said that the department will propose to the state government to either extend the term of the present house or bring administrator’s rule in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC).

He informed that a cabinet memo on the matter will be placed before the state Cabinet on October 12, for its decision.

It may be mentioned here that the last elections to the GHADC was held on October 12, 2015 and counting on October 15, the same year. The five-year term of the present House will expire on October 18, this year.

Meanwhile, sources informed that the government would also discuss the financial implication for holding the upcoming elections to the GHADC in view of the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic. It is expected that the election expenditure would tripled as the government would have to strike a balance while ensuring free and fair election and health safety of the voters, they said.

On the other hand, the BJP has recently demanded the government not to postpone the elections.
