SHILLONG: The Election Commission has announced holding of the bye-election to the Shella assembly constituency in East Khasi Hills District on October 21.

This was informed by the state chief electoral officer Frederick R Kharkongor here on Saturday.

The bye-election to the seat was necessitated following the death of former Assembly Speaker and longest serving legislator of Shella, Dr Donkupar Roy on July 28.

The notification for the Shella bye-election will be issued on September 23 while the last date of filing of nominations will be September 30 and scrutiny of nomination papers will be on October 1, Kharkongor said.

The last date of withdrawal of nominations will be on October 3 and the bye-elections will be held on October 21, he said adding that the results will be declared on October 24.
