Seinraij Jowai on Monday unveiled a bust of (L) Kambel Shullai, the visionary behind the Khnap Thangbru—an eco-friendly crematorium that transformed traditional funeral practices among the Niamtre community. The memorial has been erected at Dulong Pohhali, Jowai, as a lasting tribute to his legacy.

The ceremony was held to mark the 13th death anniversary of Shullai and was graced by Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar as Chief Guest. In his address, Dhar lauded the late innovator for his remarkable contribution to society and the environment.

“Ma Kambel was not just a man of knowledge—he was a scientist in his own right,” said Dhar. “He may not have held academic degrees, but his wisdom and ingenuity made a lasting impact on the Jaintia Hills and beyond. He is a role model for future generations.”

Earlier, Seinraij Jowai President Hercules Toi spoke on the significance of the Khnap Thangbru, describing it as a blessing for the Niamtre community. “Unlike traditional pyres, this eco-friendly crematorium reduces firewood consumption, shortens cremation time, and significantly minimises harm to the environment. It also ensures hygiene and prevents foul odours during funeral rites,” he said.

To date, about 80 Khnap Thangbru units have been built across the Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo Hills, with another 40 proposals currently under review.

One of the most prestigious recognitions received by (L) Kambel Shullai was the National Innovation Foundation–India Award, presented to him by former President of India, (L) Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, in Gujarat. The award brought nationwide attention to his work and drew journalists from across the country.

Other speakers at the programme included Jowai MLA Wailadmiki Shylla, PCCF and Head of Forest Force R.S. Gill, Seinraij Jowai Vice President EMH Passah, and Seinraij Shangpung President Nitajan Manar. The event was also attended by MDC Moonlight Pariat, Shullai’s family members, traditional heads (Dolloi), and community elders.

Born on February 8, 1939, at Loompyrdi Iongpiah, Pohdaikhoo, Kambel Shullai was the son of (L) Mahin Rymbai and (L) Nisimai Chullai.

Although he first conceptualised the crematorium in 1995, it was only between 2001 and 2003 that he was able to build a working model. The innovation earned him widespread acclaim and several accolades for its environmental and social significance.
