Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on Friday said the state government will not hesitate to take action against any so-called “High Level” involved in facilitating the illegal movement of trucks in the state.

“I don’t understand who that “High Level” is? I also came to know from the media but I feel the media should verify who this High Level is, name the people in the High Level so that we will get them arrested,” Tynsong told reporters.

“Name the people who are involved in allowing trucks to carry over 40-50 metric tons and ply through the Umiam bridge and other state roads (we will take action) if there is illegal movement of trucks,” he added.

The deputy chief minister was reacting to a query on the allegations that overloaded trucks are allowed to ply over the Umiam bridge due to the presence of a “High Level”.

“However, I feel if you are making allegations the same should be substantiated by evidence so that the government can take immediate action against such illegalities,” Tynsong said.

He informed that the transport department had not only come up with an order but had also deployed enforcement inspectors at Umiam bridge to check and take action against overloading trucks.

Tynsong, who is also in-charge of Power and PWD (Roads), said, trucks carrying more than 20 metric tons are not allowed to ply as they may be a threat to the lifespan of the existing bridge.

When asked, he said a survey is still being conducted for construction of a new bridge downstream.

“We have entrusted the architect to survey downstream and verbally he has informed us that it is feasible and this will come out to the road leading to the industrial estate and to the fire brigade,” Tynsong said.

According to him, the earlier proposal to survey the land near the existing bridge had to be cancelled after the Geological Survey of India (GSI) submitted its report which states that it was not feasible as the vibration from blasting during construction of the new bridge may affect the existing Umiam bridge.
