A political row erupted in Golaghat on Monday after a bottle was hurled at the convoy of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during his visit to the district, prompting sharp criticism from BJP leaders who accused the Congress of orchestrating the act out of frustration.

The incident took place around 1:30 pm near Rajiv Bhawan, where Congress workers were staging a protest wearing black badges, reportedly against cabinet minister Jayanta Mallabaruah. As the Chief Minister was exiting Golaghat Bezbaruah HS School and heading towards the District Sports Stadium, a Sprite bottle was thrown at his convoy. Though Sarma’s vehicle remained unaffected, the bottle struck the car of Agriculture Minister Atul Bora, who was travelling with the CM.

The protest quickly escalated into a controversy, drawing a strong reaction from the ruling party. Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia condemned the incident, calling it “a reflection of the Congress party’s deep frustration.”

“Throwing a water bottle at the Chief Minister’s convoy is not just condemnable, it exposes the state of desperation Congress has fallen into,” Saikia said in a press statement. He reiterated that while protest is a democratic right, turning to physical aggression is unacceptable and dangerous for civil society.

“The Congress party has failed to offer any real leadership and is now indulging in theatrics. With this kind of mindset, how can they expect to gain the public’s trust?” he added.

Police personnel were on the scene during the Chief Minister’s visit, and following the incident, additional security was deployed. Authorities have not yet made any arrests but are reviewing security footage to identify those responsible.

The act also drew strong online condemnation. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Assam Minister of Water Resources Pijush Hazarika wrote, “This is how @INCAssam tried to sabotage democracy in Assam. Today their goons attacked the Chief Minister of Assam with bottles, tomorrow these same goons will launch grenades. These cowards will not be spared — both electorally and legally. Mark my word @GauravGogoiAsm.”

As of now, no official statement has been issued by the Congress party regarding the incident. Meanwhile, political tensions continue to rise, with BJP leaders vowing strong legal and electoral responses.
