Border dispute with Assam to be resolved before end of MDA Govt tenure: Paul

MDA government spokesperson and cabinet minister Paul Lyngdoh has assured that the boundary dispute with Assam will be resolved before the end of the tenure of the MDA government.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Lyngdoh said that the government is making progress in resolving the issue and expects to formally sign an additional MoU by August 15, whereby five more villages will be transferred to Meghalaya as part of the deliberation of the regional committee.
According to Lyngdoh, the government has tried to minimize conflict on the ground and has been able to ensure the prevalence of peace to a large extent.
On the recent tension that erupted in Lapangap village of West Jaintia Hills, Lyngdoh said that a group of 30 police personnel, led by the SP of West Jaintia Hills, have been deployed to the area to ensure safety and security of the people.

The government has set up a makeshift camp in Lapangap and both Meghalaya and Assam have temporary camps at the site.
Lyngdoh said that once the boundary issue is resolved at the regional committee level, further steps can be taken.
“We have set up in Lapangap so that the sense of insecurity has already to a large extent been controlled and we are managing things well and hopefully this problem will be resolved once we have the discussion at the regional committee level,” he added.
He emphasized that the government is serious about ensuring the safety and security of the people and has increased police presence in the area.
“The SP is personally overseeing the operations, which is a pointer to the government’s commitment to resolving the issue,” Lyngdoh added further.
