Following the attack on the police by a Karbi mob on Saturday, West Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police Chemphang Syrti has refuted allegations on social media that the Meghalaya Police ran away fearing the Karbi people.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Syrti clarified the situation, stating, “I am here to clarify that yesterday, while our police team went to cause an enquiry into the information received of the setting up of a shed by Assam police in an area which the Karbi people claimed to be well within Assam and Lapangap residents claimed to be within Meghalaya, a mob from Assam side, came to charge the police team and demanded that they should go back as the area falls well within Assam.”

He said that a mob later turned unruly and started pelting stones and using catapults to chase the police team. On this, as there is no clear demarcation which is Assam and which is Meghalaya the police team retrieved to a certain location and did not resort to using any force to avoid any untoward incident, he added.

Syrti, stated that the crowd from the Assam side remained on the ground they claimed to be within Assam, ceasing their attack on the police team. Assam police were promptly contacted, and they arrived at the scene to control the situation on their side. Simultaneously, efforts were made to restrain the crowd from the Meghalaya side from advancing further into the disputed area.
