JOWAI: The mortal remains of a Nigerian national was disposed of in West Jaintia Hills District, after none of his family members came forward to take custody of his body.

Ukhuefa Prince Ken was found dead at Amlympiang near Dawki, which is 200-300 meters away from  the international border with Bangladesh on November 17, last year.

Ken hailed from Benin City, Edo Nigeria. His body was identified by one Emmanuel Ninamani Nnameka from SOS Road Mirzapur Ganakpara, Guwahati, Assam.

Ken’s body was kept at Ialong Civil Hospital for one week.

District police chief Lakador Syiem informed that the court has already passed an order for disposing of his mortal remains.

He said this was because none of the family members have come forward to claim his body.

“Therefore, as on date, the body has been disposed of by the order of the court,” the SP said.

Asked, Syiem however said that the police are yet to get the post mortem report to know the actual cause that led to the death of the Nigerian national.

“However according to doctors, he (Ken) must have died due to a heart attack,” he said.

Earlier in October, last year, three Nigerian nationals were also arrested from a border village in the district, after they illegally crossed over to India from Bangladesh.

They have been identified as Chukwuma Celestine Okwuwa (34), Lucky Osas Enebi (36) and Ndubuisi Moses Chime (28).

A case was also registered with the Amlarem police station under the Foreigner’s Act.

When asked, the SP informed that the case is still under investigation.  “We have also asked for the support of different agencies and it will take time because they will also have to investigate at their level as well,” he said.

Syiem said that these foreigners have illegally entered India and are trying to settle down in the different parts.

It may be mentioned here that the East Jaintia Hills police had also arrested many such Nigerian nationals in their jurisdiction.
