BJP in-charge Meghalaya, Dr Chuba Ao on Thursday the party would only issue tickets to winnable candidates for the upcoming elections to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) slated for April 9.

He however said that the party is yet to discuss whether to field any candidate for the bye-election to the Mawryngkneng Assembly seat.

Speaking to reporters after a party meeting, Dr Ao said the district presidents are working very hard and have forwarded applications from aspiring candidates to the state election committee authorized by the party’s headquarters.

“The approved election committee will sit and will find out winnable candidates as in elections acceptability, ability, mobility is very important for every candidate,” he said while informing that the party will take a call on issuing of tickets within two-three days.

The ruling National People’s Party and opposition Congress have already declared their respective list of candidates for elections to the 29 seats of the GHADC.

Asked, the BJP in-charge Meghalaya said that the delay to release the list of candidates was part of the party’s strategy.

“This is our own strategy. We will give tickets only to winnable candidates,” he said while refusing to disclose the number of seats his party will be contesting.

On the Mawryngkneng bypoll, Dr Ao said the party will decide once the Election Commission of India announces the vacancy of the seat.
