BJP legislator from South Shillong Sanbor Shullai on Thursday sought the intervention of the Deputy Chief Minister Incharge Urban Affairs Sniawbhalang Dhar for completing the smart city projects in and around the constituency within six months.

He informed that the department in its letter dated 25th April 2023 has cited several strategic locations for implementation of integrated command and control centre (ICCC) and various equipment/components like smart poles, VMD, ECB & PAS, CCTV ITMS and RF towers for BTS and backhaul in various locations.

In this regard a series of meetings with the traditional heads, local welfare societies and the department concerned had been initiated from my end in order to ensure a time bound completion of the project.

“However the delay in the completion of the project needs to be addressed immediately and the department concerned should ensure the completion of the pending work within six months,” he said.

Stating that the smart road starting from Rhino point till Laban Last Stop, has not yet started, Shullai said, “Furthermore the proposal for installation of such CCTVs at Cantonment area is yet to be addressed by the implementing agency despite several intimation as the concerned vulnerable area is still being left out from the project.”

“The issue related to drugs and theft is alarming and completion of such important projects shall be of much needed help to the police department and also ensure to contain law and order. The stakeholders which include the dorbar shnongs, village council and various welfare societies should be kept informed about the entire project as it will help to ensure proper functioning of such smart equipments and timely repair and maintenance,” he said while adding that  the government should initiate long term Annual maintenance contract (AMC) and also take warranty extensions to get higher benefits and long term low maintenance costs.

He said there are numerous sensitive areas within the Cantonment area which includes the likes of Jhalupara, Lower Paltan Bazar, Paltan Bazar and Cantonment Beat House areas. These pockets should not be left out from the Smart City project which will corrode the very purpose in making Shillong city smart with the installation of these smart equipment, he added.
