The state BJP strongly on Monday condemned the uncivilised, undemocratic and unpardonable attack on Numal Momin Deputy Speaker of Assam Assembly and demanded that criminal proceedings be initiated against Nurul Huda immediately and exemplary punishment be handed out to deter any such atrocious act in the future.

In a statement, BJP state president Rikman G Momin said, “Numal Momin is the only Garo representative and also the only Christian member in the Assam Assembly and this despicable act has hurt the sentiments of our entire state. Momin is highly respected by everyone, not only in Assam or Meghalaya, but by people across the North East. Physical abuse carried out against such an esteemed personality cannot be tolerated.”

“We are shocked to note that the Congress party, which can’t stop screaming about how much it cares for tribals, is absolutely silent when it comes to this act of criminal belligerence by its own party members. The Congress party’s studied silence on this shameful act by Nurul Huda only proves the deep-seated bias that Congress has for the hill people, the tribal citizens of our country and for Meghalaya in general. I appeal to all my fellow citizens of the state to remember this incident and give Congress a befitting reply in each coming election,” he said.

“I request the Assam Police to take action against Nurul Huda and bring justice to a person who is revered by one and all,” he added.

The incident occurred earlier in the day when a scuffle broke out between ruling and opposition MLAs outside the Assembly. Dr. Momin sustained injuries to his left hand and entered the House with it bandaged, prompting Speaker Biswajit Daimary to adjourn the session for ten minutes amid loud protests.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma later confirmed that Dr. Momin would file an FIR and called for a police investigation.

The BJP’s strong reaction comes amid rising political tension, with the ruling party accusing the Congress of orchestrating the attack, while the opposition maintains that the claims are exaggerated and politically motivated.
