BJP leader and Tura MDC Bernard N Marak has expressed concern over alleged discrepancies in the Chief Minister’s Scholarship Scheme.

Despite Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma’s announcement of a Rs 6,000 scholarship for each student during the budget session on March 5, 2025, many students have received less than the promised amount, Marak said on Sunday.

According to him,  multiple complaints have been received from students of different colleges.

Some students received as little as Rs 1,500, Rs 2,000, or Rs 3,000, instead of the promised Rs 6,000. A few students reported that the amount credited to their account did not reflect in their account statements, he added.

The discrepancies have led to confusion and doubts among students, who were eagerly awaiting the scholarship to support their educational expenses. With over 80,000 students set to benefit from the scheme, the anomalies have raised questions about the implementation and management of the program.

Marak urged the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) to take note of the discrepancies and rectify the issues to ensure that the assured amount of Rs 6,000 is disbursed to the post-matric students.

“This has given rise to confusion and doubts among the students.

It would be appreciated if the CMO office take note of the anomalies in the disbursement of CM’s scholarship scheme so that such confusion does not occur in the future and that it would benefit the poor students through the proper disbursement of the assured amount of Rs 6,000 to the post matric students,” he stated.

The Meghalaya government has allocated a budget of Rs 48 crores for the successful implementation of the scheme, aiming to support 80,000 post-matriculate students in the state.
