BJP asks MDA Govt to pinpoint reason for extending the KHADC, JHADC term

BJP chief spokesperson M Kharkrang on Saturday said that the government should have valid reasons for extending the term of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) by another six months.
“The government will have to spell out what is the emergency situation or exigencies that warrant the extension of the term of the two ADCs,” Kharkrang told reporters.
“You cannot extend the term of the council on flimsy grounds. There has to be some valid reasons. Therefore, we leave it to the government to come clear on that,” Kharkrang said.
The State Cabinet on Friday approved the proposal to extend the term of the two ADCs after the delimitation committees have sought for more time to complete the exercise of delimiting the constituencies of the respective councils.
Asked, Kharkrang however said, “If the government feels that we have reached an emergency situation where we have to finish off this delimitation exercise before we start the new election, then now the government will have to come clear on what is the emergency in that.”
He also alleged that the delimitation committees have been formed a long time back and yet there has been no ground work. “Supposed you don’t complete it within six months and what happens, you extend again?” he asked.
The BJP leader further stated that for anything there has to be a political reason for it. “Even delimitation, there has to be a political reason for that,” he added.
