    Assam government on Tuesday a new bill-  Assam Compulsory Registration of Muslim Marriage and Divorces Bill, 2024 seeking compulsory registration of Muslim marriage and divorces by a government registrar in place of Qazi to protect the rights of married Muslim women and men.

    The bill was introduced by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pijush Hazarika in the absence of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The bill was approved by the state cabinet on August 22.

    The bill aims to address and prevent child marriages and polygamy in the state.

    The new legislation will prohibit the registration of marriages involving individuals under the age of 18 to safeguard minors and ensure that all marriages comply with legal standards.

    The bill stipulates that marriage registrations will be handled by government authorities rather than Qazis. Once enacted, the new law will make the registration of child marriages illegal.

    Earlier on August 22, the state government introduced the  Assam Repealing Bill 2024 to repeal the Assam Muslim Marriages and Divorce Registration Act and Rules 1935. This repeal, along with the

    Earlier, the Assam government had considered introducing legislation on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) following the Lok Sabha elections. Mr Sarma has also pledged that child marriages will be eradicated from Assam by 2026.
