‘Bhupenda Uncut’ documentary offers rare glimpse into Hazarika’s life and philosophy

Guwahati, Sept 3: Bhupenda Uncut is a candid documentary capturing Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika during his 1999 visit to England, where he attended a cultural programme organised by the Assam Medical College Doctors Alumni Group.
Fondly called Bhupenda, the legendary singer and composer appears in first-person narration, reflecting on formative experiences and personal milestones. He recalls his childhood and his interactions with stalwarts like Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, the pioneer of Assamese cinema, as well as his years of higher studies in New York. He also speaks about meeting his wife, Priyamvada Patel, offering candid insights into their relationship, while outlining his broader philosophy and ideology.
In intimate moments, Hazarika recites some of his poetry, including verses believed to remain unpublished. His recollections reveal a blend of assertion, hurt, disillusionment and poignant self-reflection, balanced by childlike innocence, simplicity and sensitivity.
Shot 26 years ago on a Hi-8 camera, the film is regarded as a valuable archival record, offering a direct window into the mind of the cultural icon. The makers describe it as a humble tribute to his birth centenary, preserving a primary source of his thoughts and artistic journey.
The documentary is produced and directed by Bobbeeta Sharma, with Chinmoy Sharma as executive producer and cameraman, Ravindra Badgaiyan as editor and creative director.
