Bhupen Hazarika’s birth centenary honoured at World Expo in Japan, Assam artistes shine on global stage

The immortal legacy of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika resonated across an international platform as a colourful event marked his birth centenary at the India Pavilion of the ongoing World Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan.
The programme, dedicated to celebrating the legendary singer, lyricist and composer, showcased his artistic journey and global appeal. A cultural troupe from Assam led by noted performer Ranjit Gogoi presented dance interpretations of Hazarika’s most iconic songs, including Mahabahu Brahmaputra, Moi Eti Zazabor and Manuhe Manuhor Babe. The performances captured the depth of his lyrics, his distinctive style and his universal humanist vision rooted in Assam’s natural and cultural landscape.
Audiences in Japan and beyond warmly received the showcase, many describing it as a powerful introduction to Hazarika’s timeless artistry. Known not just as a musician but also as a voice of humanity, his creations reflected social struggles, aspirations and the spirit of brotherhood.
Hazarika’s historic ties with Japan were highlighted in a presentation by Padmapani Bora, Commissioner and Secretary of Information and Public Relations, Printing and Stationery Department. Bora spoke about the maestro’s visits to Japan, his contribution to global art and culture, and the state government’s initiatives to mark his centenary year.
The programme also featured audio-visual presentations on Hazarika’s life and works, offering audiences an intimate glimpse into his creative universe.
Senior Assam government officials, including J.B. Ekka, Additional Chief Secretary of Industries and Commerce, and Diganta Bora, Commissioner and Secretary of Tourism and Home, were present alongside representatives of the Union government and cultural delegates.
The centenary celebration in Osaka drew wide appreciation as a meaningful tribute and a significant step in projecting Bhupen Hazarika’s artistic contributions to the global cultural stage.
