Communal tension flared in Assam’s Hojai district on Sunday after beef was allegedly dumped near a Kali Mandir in the Barpukhuri area, close to the Hojai–Jogijan road. The act sparked outrage among the local Hindu population and led to mass protests, clashes, and one arrest.

According to reports, unidentified individuals left beef near the temple and along the adjacent road early in the morning, angering locals who gathered in large numbers to condemn the act. The protesters blocked roads, raised slogans like “Gau Hatya Bandha Korok” and “Jai Shri Ram,” and claimed this wasn’t an isolated incident. “Every year around Bakrid, similar incidents happen, but authorities fail to act decisively,” said one protestor.

The protest turned violent in Bhuyanpatty, where a clash broke out between two groups. Police had to resort to a lathi charge to bring the situation under control. One person, Amir Hussain of Bhuyanpatty, was arrested. Authorities confirmed that further investigations are ongoing.

In response, senior district officials — including Deputy Commissioner Bidyut Bikash Bhagwati, Superintendent of Police Saurab Gupta, and local MLA Ramkrishna Ghosh — visited the area to defuse tensions. They met with community members and received a memorandum requesting better security, installation of street lights, and the setup of a permanent police outpost.

“This appears to be the work of anti-social elements trying to disrupt harmony on a holy day,” said DC Bhagwati. “We are addressing local concerns immediately and will consult the government for longer-term measures.”

Inspector General of Police Akhilesh Kumar Singh also visited the site and assured a thorough investigation. “We’re committed to identifying those responsible and taking strict action. Police patrolling in the area has been increased, and plans for a permanent outpost are being discussed,” he said.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed the incident on X (formerly Twitter), linking it to a broader pattern across the state. “Our Constitution protects religious freedom, but it does not permit lawlessness. On Eid-ul-Zuha, we received reports of illegal cattle slaughter and cattle parts found in several locations, including Hojai. Sixteen arrests have been made,” Sarma posted.

According to the Chief Minister, five such incidents were reported in areas including Kamrup (near Cotton University), Dhubri, Hojai, and Sribhumi. Additionally, five illegal slaughter sites were uncovered in Cachar and Karimganj districts.

Authorities have since tightened security in the Barpukhuri area, with more patrols deployed and efforts underway to restore calm and maintain communal peace.
