The East Jaintia Hills District Administration has issued a public notice enforcing a ban on the use of plastic items below 120 microns, including single-use plastic bags.

The move is in accordance with the Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules, 2024, and a directive from the Hon’ble High Court of Meghalaya in PIL No. 7 of 2024 (Phuyosa Yobin vs State of Meghalaya & anr).

All shopkeepers, stakeholders, wholesalers, suppliers, and vendors within the district who are in possession of such plastic materials are instructed to return them to the original sellers or dispose of them in a hygienic manner.

All shopkeepers, stakeholders, wholesalers, suppliers, and vendors are directed to return plastics below 120 microns to the sellers on or before June 30, 2025, and ensure complete removal of single-use plastics from the markets.

Failure to comply will result in the seizure of these items by Executive Magistrates.
