    This is for information of all the wholesalers/retailers of fruits in the State of Meghalaya that the sale of fruits such as Mangoes, Papayas, Bananas etc ripened with Carbide gas/acetylene gas is prohibited under Regulation 2.3.5 of the Food Safety & Standards (Prohibition & Restriction on Sales) Regulation, 2011.

    (An extract 2.3.5: “No person shall sell or offer or expose for sale or have in his premises for the purpose of sale under any description, fruits which have been artificially ripened by use acetylene gas, commonly known as Carbide gas”).

    Violation of the above, mentioned provision of the Regulations is an offence punishable under Section 59 (ii)of Food Safety & Standards Act, 2006.

    (An extract: “Where such failure or Contravention results in a grievous injury, with imprisonment for a term which may extend to six years and also with fine which
    may extend to five lakh rupees”).

    Therefore, all concerned are directed not to indulge in such practices failing which necessary actions as per the provisions of the Food Safety & Standards Act, 2006 shall be
    taken.
