    SHILLONG: Former Assembly Speaker late Dr Donkupar Roy’s son Balajied Kupar Synrem on Friday took oath as the new MLA of Shella. 

    He was elected in the bypoll and replaced his father, who had represented Shella for 31 years since 1988. It was a historic win for the United Democratic Party (UDP) when Balajied retained the Shella seat by a huge margin of 6,221 votes. 

    The oath was administered to 31 year old Balajied by the Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh at his office chamber, here. 

    The ceremony was also attended by chief minister Conrad K Sangma, cabinet ministers, leaders of the UDP and opposition MLAs. 

    Speaking to reporters at the sidelines of the ceremony, Balajied said, “I personally feel that I have huge shoes to fill and looking at the results yesterday, there is a huge task ahead of me but I will try my best and I am sure that my seniors will help and guide me in the days to come.” 

    Congratulating the newly elected MLA of Shella, Metbah, also the president of the UDP said the whole credit goes to the people of Shella constituency for reposing their faith again in the family of late Dr Donkupar.

    Acknowledging the support of the NPP and HSPDP, he said each and everyone has contributed to the victory. 

    On the other hand, chief minister Conrad K Sangma said the just concluded bye-election was a tribute to late Dr Donkupar Roy. 

    “We are thankful to the people of Shella constituency for reposing their faith in Balajied. This election has been a tribute to late Dr Donkupar and I think he is looking down on all of us and I am sure he is feeling very proud about the fact that his son has won with such a big margin,” Sangma said told reporters. 

    Stating that the personality of late Dr Donkupar was such that he was able to pull people from different political parties and work for a united cause, the chief minister said, “The unity of the UDP, NPP and HSPDP as well the public has given such results. I congratulate Balajied.” 

    Asked, Sangma said definitely Balajied is a very qualified person with a lot of qualities, who has shown his capacity by the margin he has received and the government will ensure that his qualities and entire skills are used in the right manner for the betterment of the government, the people and state as a whole.
