    The Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority in Collaboration with the District Legal Services Authority, Shillong; Meghalaya State Commission for Women, Social Welfare Department and Manbha Foundation organized a Legal Awareness and Outreach Programme on Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 on occasion of “Pan India Awareness & Outreach Programme as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav” on Friday at Shillong Law College.

    Justice HS Thangkhiew, Judge, High Court of Meghalaya was the Chief Guest for the programme.

    The Resource Persons for the legal awareness programme on Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 and issues related to women were  NA Khan, MHJS, District & Sessions Judge, East Khasi Hills; Daphira Sohtun, MJS, Secretary, DLSA, Shillong,  Annie Sohtun, Coordinator, Meghalaya State Commission for Women; Daisily Thangkhiew & Moni Borgohain, Legal Aid Counsels, East Khasi Hills District. Among others present was KJ Lyngdoh, Joint Registrar (Listing)cum-OSD to the Hon’ble the Chief Justice, High Court of Meghalaya, TTM Sangma, MJS, OSD, MSLSA; Principal, Shillong Law College and students of Shillong Law College and Martin Luther Christian University, Shillong.

    The topics covered during the programme were Free Legal Aid, Article 21, Article 39A, Domestic violence, role of the service provider, protection orders, residence orders, monetary relief, etc under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005. Thereafter, the Chief Guest interacted with the participants during the open session.

    Similarly, the Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority in Collaboration with District Legal Services Authorities and Grassroots, Shillong organized multiple Programmes observing the United Nations day on occasion of “Pan India Awareness & Outreach Programme as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav” on the Friday at Shillong, East Khasi Hills District and Khliehriat, East Jaintia Hills District.

    Justice W Diengdoh, Judge, High Court of Meghalaya was the Chief Guest for the programme organized in RBA Hindi Secondary School, Shillong. The Resource Persons for the programme were Daphira Sohtun, MJS, Secretary, DLSA, Shillong; P Roy, Legal Aid Counsel, East Khasi Hills District, J.K. Mishra, Principal, R.B.A Hindi Secondary School.

    The topics covered during the programme were United Nations Organizations, its roles and functions, Free Legal Aid, Article 21, Article 39A and roles and functions of Para Legal Volunteers. Thereafter, the Chief Guest interacted with the participants during the open session. 

    Meanwhile, a programme was organized at Khliehriat West Community Hall, East Jaintia Hills Districtl. The Resource Persons for the programme were NM Momin, MJS, CJM-cum-Secretary, DLSA, Khliehriat;  Reading war, Legal Aid Counsel, East Jaintia Hills District and Chenmiki Laloo, Team Lead, Grassroots.

    The topics covered during the programme were Forest Laws/Act vis-à-vis

    Customary Laws, Free Prior Informed Consent under Article 19 of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).
