    As part of the celebration of Meghalaya’s 50 years of statehood, the Office of the Executive Engineer, Water Resource Department, East Jaintia Hills District, Khliehriat today conducted an awareness programme for the Water Users Association (WUA) of the District at the District Agriculture Officers, Godown, East Jaintia Hills District, Khliehriat.

    The Chief Guest of the programme, E Kharmalki, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, East Jaintia Hills District, Khliehriat in his speech said that the beneficiaries should make good use of the schemes provided by various Government departments. Speaking on the importance of preserving nature and its resources, he said “There are various steps and measures that should be put in practice by every citizen to safeguard the environment and restore the natural resources for a sustainable living”.

    The Deputy Commissioner also said that the people should not be over dependent on conventional energy and they should now focus on renewable resources like solar energy for generating electricity which is a long term water saving solution. He also stressed on multiple strategies of conservation and urged upon the gathering to start practicing the methods for conserving water such as roof top rain water harvesting, construction of underground water storage tanks, and waste water treatments plans.

    R Lyngskor, Executive Engineer, Water Resource Department, East Jaintia Hills District, Khliehriat in his welcome address said that the objective of the programme is to create awareness on various activities, projects and schemes implemented by the Department. He also appealed to the farmers groups present at the gathering to work together with the department so that schemes and projects implemented will be a success and benefit the people of the District.

    Others who also spoke during the programme include DB. Dhar, Assistant Director Agriculture(Agro), East Jaintia Hills District, Khliehriat, A Malang, Horticulture Development Officer, East Jaintia Hills District, Khliehriat, R Tongper, J.E, Water Resource Department, East Jaintia Hills District.

    During the programme, E Kharmalki, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, East Jaintia Hills District presented an award and a cash prize to TISHA Water Users Association (WUA)  of Shnongrim Village for their Outstanding Performance in the District.
