Assembly panel directs completion of Umsning block office by Nov

The Assembly’s Estimates Committee on Monday directed the completion of the construction of the Umsning Community & Rural Development Block office building by November this year.
The direction was issued during a spot inspection conducted by the committee under the chairmanship of UDP legislator from Nongpoh Mayralborn Syiem.
“We are privileged to conduct this inspection through the Estimates Committee of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. Our main objective was to follow up on the ongoing construction of the Block Development Officer’s office at the Umsning C&RD Block. This project has been pending for a long time, and the Committee observed several issues causing the delay,” Syiem said.
“We conducted a thorough site inspection and received a detailed briefing from officials of the Community and Rural Development Department. The Committee has directed the concerned contractor to complete the work by November 2025, a timeline committed by the contractor and officials,”he stated while adding “We hope that with regular monitoring and the government’s aspiration to complete all C&RD Block offices across the State on time, this project will soon be operational. Once completed, the office will provide improved services to the public, including headmen, Village Organisations (VOs), NGOs, and Self-Help Groups.”

The committee also inspected the ITI and Polytechnic projects, noting progress in the latter but delays in the former due to infrastructure and utility issues.
“The Polytechnic project is progressing well and is expected to be completed in the coming months, which will benefit students through various technical courses. However, the ITI project has faced delays due to issues such as approach road construction, external electrification, and water supply,” Syiem said.
“The Committee has taken note of these challenges and will pursue them with the concerned departments to ensure the project becomes functional at the earliest,”he added.

Syiem was accompanied by committee members Wailadmiki Shylla (Jowai), Remington Gabil Momin (Rambrai Jyrngam), Charles Marngar (Mawhati), and Adelbert Nongrum (North Shillong). The local MLA of Umsning, Dr. Celestine Lyngdoh, also joined the team during the inspection at Umsning.
