In a proud moment for Assam, two gram panchayats have been conferred the prestigious National Panchayat Awards 2024 for their exceptional contributions to sustainable and inclusive development.

The awards were presented by President of India, Droupadi Murmu, at a grand ceremony held at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, on Wednesday.

Commissioner, Panchayat and Rural Development, Keerthi Jalli received the awards on behalf of the Assam government. Additional Commissioner Jayanta Goswami was also present in the function.

Panchayat and rural Development Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass extended his heartfelt congratulations to the gram panchayats, acknowledging the dedication of their members to improving rural livelihoods and said, “This prestigious award recognizes your outstanding contributions to rural development, and it’s truly inspiring to see your dedication to improving the lives of rural communities.”

Jengrai Gram Panchayat under Majuli district has been chosen for the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Panchayat Satat Vikas Puraskar and was awarded Rs 1 crore in the category of child-friendly panchayat.

Similarly, Bebejia Demow Bangthai Gram Panchayat under Nagaon district has been selected for the Nanaji Deshmukh Sarvottam Panchayat Satat Vikas Puraskar and received an award of Rs 1.25 crore for being the best gram panchayat.

The Jengrai gram panchayat has made significant efforts to ensure the welfare and development of its children. The Anganwadi centres in the area provide comprehensive nutritional support and early education, fostering a healthy and supportive environment for young children. The gram panchayat has been successful in eradicating child labour, child abuse, and any crimes against children, which highlights the community’s commitment to safeguarding their rights. In terms of educational infrastructure, there are 21 primary schools, ensuring that all children have access to quality education. The availability of 7 well-maintained playgrounds and 1 volleyball court emphasizes the importance of physical development, offering ample opportunities for children to engage in sports and recreation. The gram panchayat has prioritized physical well-being by constructing two stadiums to promote sports and recreational activities.

Bebejia Demow Bangthai Gram Panchayat is under Khagarijan Panchayat Samiti part of Nagaon Zila Parishad. There are a total 6 villages under Bebejia Demow Bangthai Gram Panchayat jurisdiction. Gram Panchayat Khagarijan is further divided into 10 wards.
