Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Friday said the transit of the cattle from other states to Meghalaya will not be an issue even though neighbouring Assam has decided to implement a cow protection law.

The Assam Cabinet has recently approved a bill in this regard.

When asked, Sangma told reporters that the state government had already discussed with states – West Bengal, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, UP, Telangana – which are providing cattle to Meghalaya.

“Therefore, all steps will be taken from our side to ensure that the transit of the cattle that is meant for Meghalaya should not be hampered because of the law passed by Assam,” he said.

On the other hand, the Chief Minister said that the state government will also examine Assam’s cow protection bill to know how they plan to implement it.

“If there is any issue which is going to hamper our people and our economy, the matter will be taken up not only with Assam government but we will try to ask central government to intervene into the matter but as I said, I will not be able to give exact comment on this without examining the law and Act that they have passed,” he said.
