Assamese short film Ansuni Chinkhe wins big on global stage, showcasing regional cinema’s power

Ansuni Chinkhe, an Assamese short film written and directed by senior IPS officer Dr. Parthasarathi Mahanta, is earning major acclaim on both national and international platforms, establishing itself as a breakout success from Northeast India.
The film, produced by Mina Mahanta and Indrani Baruah, stars acclaimed actor Seema Biswas in a powerful solo performance. Her role as the film’s only character has drawn widespread praise for its emotional intensity and subtlety.
At the recent Indian Independent Film Festival (May–June 2025) in Kolkata, Ansuni Chinkhe was awarded Best Short Film, reflecting its strong narrative and artistic merit.
Earlier, the film was part of the International Competition category at the Jaipur International Film Festival 2025, where it won Best Actress for Seema Biswas and Best Director for Dr. Mahanta—both top honours in the short film category.
The film continued its winning streak with another Best Short Film award at the Delhi Short Film Festival 2025, solidifying its reputation as a standout in India’s short film landscape.
In a major international milestone, Ansuni Chinkhe was featured in the Marché du Film online segment at Cannes, where it received enthusiastic global feedback for its minimalist storytelling and emotional depth.
With its restrained yet powerful direction and remarkable solo performance, Ansuni Chinkhe is not only elevating Assamese cinema but also shining a global spotlight on the storytelling strength of Indian short films.
