Four years after the incident, a Biswanath court in Assam has convicted 23-year-old Bishal Thapa for the rape of a five-year-old girl and sentenced him to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment.

The judgment was delivered on Thursday by District and Sessions Judge Bobita Kshetry under Section 4(2) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 15,000.

The offence took place in 2021 in Gohain Chapori under Sootea Police Station. The case was registered as Sootea PS Case No. 01/2021 and investigated by then Officer-in-Charge SI Kalpajit Sharma.

Thapa, son of Bom Bahadur Thapa, was arrested and prosecuted under relevant POCSO provisions. Special Public Prosecutor Moushumi Borthakur led the prosecution.

The conviction underscores the judiciary’s strong stance on crimes against children in Assam.
