Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday met industrialist and Tata Trust chairman Ratan Tata and expressed gratitude to him for Tata’s upcoming Rs 27,000 crore semiconductor plant at Jagiroad in Morigaoan district of Central Assam.

“The Tata semiconductor facility in Jagiroad will put us on the world semiconductor map and transform the economic landscape of East India,” Sarma said after he met with Tata and Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran in Mumbai.

“On behalf of the people of Assam, I conveyed our heartfelt gratitude to Ratan Tata and N Chandrasekharan for displaying remarkable conviction and faith in our state to execute this mega game-changing investment. We expect the first chips to roll out by 2025,” Sarma said on X and tagged pictures with Ratan Tata and N Chandrasekaran.

During the meeting, Sarma also discussed creating a Skill Development Centre that will be co-located within the premises of the semiconductor facility in Jagiroad.

Sarma also said that the Skill Development Centre will empower youths from the Northeast by offering them courses in Artificial Intelligence, semiconductors and electronics and will help them secure jobs in the Jagiroad unit.

“Already 1,500 youth from Assam, mainly women, are undertaking training at Tata facilities in and around Bangalore. This will place them in

leadership position once the semiconductor facility becomes operational in 2025,” he said.

On March 14, Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually laid the foundation for the project, which will produce “made in India” chips that have been designed and manufactured in Assam.

The project will produce 48 million chips per day and is expected to be partially operational from 2025.

“The 21st century is indisputably driven by technology, with electronic chips playing a pivotal role. The development of ‘Made In India chips’, designed in India, holds immense potential in propelling our nation towards self-sufficiency and modernization. Despite being left behind during the first, second, and third industrial revolutions due to various reasons, Bharat is now confidently forging ahead to lead the fourth industrial revolution, Industry 4.0,” Modi said laying the foundation stone of the project.
