Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has condemned the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, that claimed 28 lives, calling it a stark reminder of the rising threat of religious extremism and the need for national unity.

Addressing the media on Wednesday, Sarma expressed deep shock over the incident, which reportedly involved terrorists targeting victims based on their religion. “According to reports, attackers forced people to recite the Kalima—those who couldn’t were shot. This is a chilling example of terrorism rooted in religious hatred,” he said.

Sarma linked the attack to recent inflammatory remarks by Pakistan’s Army Chief and warned of a broader campaign aimed at destabilizing communal harmony. “Just days ago, we heard threats from Pakistan’s military leadership. Now, innocent civilians are murdered based on faith. It’s not a coincidence,” he added.

The Chief Minister urged communities, particularly Hindus, to rise above caste divisions in the face of such indiscriminate violence. “These extremists don’t care if someone is SC, ST, or OBC. To them, all Hindus are targets. That’s why internal unity is vital—there should be no room for casteism when we’re facing such threats.”

He also warned against divisive elements within India, accusing certain individuals of furthering foreign agendas. “Some within our own borders behave like proxies for Pakistan, spreading division and weakening our social fabric. The people of India must stay alert and respond with unity and resolve,” Sarma said.

Reiterating the need for national solidarity, Sarma stated, “We are not only dealing with threats from outside. Internal fractures can be just as dangerous. The strength of our society lies in standing together, regardless of background or belief.”

Sarma’s remarks come amid widespread national outrage, with civil society and political leaders demanding decisive action. His comments underline growing concerns over both international and domestic factors contributing to a volatile security environment in the country.
