Assam class X results out; Amishi Saikia tops, overall pass rate plunges to 63.98%

In a defining year for Assam’s education system, Amishi Saikia of Pragya Academy Senior Secondary School, Jorhat, has topped the HSLC 2025 examinations with a stellar 98.5% (591 marks). Her achievement comes amid a sharp decline in the overall pass rate, which dropped to 63.98%, raising red flags across the education community.
Amishi, who shifted from the ICSE to the state board in Class IX, said she had to adapt to a new exam format introduced by the Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB).
“Don’t stress about ranks. It’s just an exam—focus on understanding and daily goals,” she told students.
She followed a consistent, well-paced study routine with plenty of rest.
“I didn’t over-study or rely on online videos. I stuck to my textbooks, solved test papers, and focused on truly understanding concepts,” she said.
Amishi’s interests go beyond academics—she enjoys singing, dancing, and painting—and she aims to pursue astrophysics or software engineering in the future.
2nd Rank: Saptarswa Bordoloi (Assam Jatiya Bidyalay, Kamrup M) – 98.33% (590 marks)
3rd Rank: Anirban Borgohain – 98.17% (589 marks)

Both highlighted the importance of balance and regular study. Saptarswa, a karate enthusiast, credited his discipline to martial arts, while Anirban, a sports and quiz lover, aspires to become a doctor like his father.
The overall performance painted a more sobering picture. Of 4,22,737 candidates who appeared in the exam, 2,70,471 were declared to pass. Of them, 89,041 secured the first division, 1,35,568 second and 2,70,862 secured the third division.
1,68,312 students got letter marks, 5,336 distinction marks and 16,517 got star marks in the exam.
Boys shone in the exam compared to girls bearing a 67.59% pass rate. The pass percentage of girls is 61.09%.
Sivasagar (85.55%) is the top-performing district, followed by Dibrugarh (81.10%), Dhemaji (80.64%), Jorhat: 79.61% and Nalbari: 78.40%.
The Barak Valley district showed a low performance with Sribhumi bearing 47.96% pass rate, Cachar 51.58% and Hailakandi bearing 58.38% pass rate.
In BTR, Chirang recorded a 74.44% pass rate, Baksa 69.64%, Udalguri 60.10% and Kokrajhar recorded a 61.12% pass rate.
Among the hill districts, Karbi Anglong recorded a 66.80% pass rate, West Karbi Anglong 61.13% and Dima Hasao recorded a 76.64% pass rate.
Reacting to the results, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the exam’s successful rollout under ASSEB. Conducted between February 15 and March 3, results were declared within 37 days, a record in efficiency.
“This streamlined system marks a new era of accountability. It’s not just about marks—it’s about momentum,” Sarma said in a post on X.
He highlighted the shift to concept-based evaluation, aimed at moving away from rote learning.
“Despite the major shift, students showed resilience. The results reflect the early success of academic reform,” he added.
