The Assam BJP has strongly reprimanded party MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi, demanding that he apologize to the people of Assam for his unruly behaviour in the state assembly on Friday.

Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia issued the directive on Saturday, stressing that such misconduct is unacceptable and must not be repeated.

The controversy unfolded during Friday’s budget session of the Assam Legislative Assembly when Kurmi, the BJP MLA from Mariani, created chaos in the House. He aggressively confronted Opposition leaders, issued verbal threats, and disrupted proceedings, leading to an uproar. His actions outraged legislators, with Opposition members calling for his immediate expulsion from the assembly.

In a letter to Kurmi, Saikia condemned the incident and highlighted the gravity of the situation. “Yesterday, during discussions in the Assam Legislative Assembly, you left your seat and aggressively chased a fellow MLA. This behaviour has drawn public attention and raised serious concerns,” Saikia wrote.

He further reminded Kurmi of his responsibility as an elected representative. “Your actions violate the rules and decorum of the Assembly. As a seasoned politician who has been elected multiple times with the people’s mandate, such behaviour is shocking and deeply disappointing.”

Saikia also underscored the BJP’s commitment to discipline and ideological integrity. “The BJP is a party built on discipline, tolerance, and self-restraint. We engage in ideological battles with dignity, not through unruly conduct. Your actions on the Assembly floor go against the party’s values and reforms.”

The BJP president urged Kurmi to issue a public apology and refrain from similar conduct in the future. “As a public representative, you are expected to uphold the dignity of the Assembly. Therefore, you are directed to seek an apology from the people of Assam and ensure that such behaviour is not repeated.”

Saikia’s letter came amid statewide protests by nearly all opposition parties, including Congress, AAP Assam, AJP, and Raijor Dal, demanding action against Kurmi.
