In a significant step towards resolving the decades-old inter-state border dispute, the 5th Regional Committee meeting between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh was held at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (ICAR), Dirpai Chapori, Gogamukh on Tuesday. The meeting was jointly chaired by Assam Cabinet Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah and Arunachal Pradesh Minister Kento Jini.

This meeting is part of the structured and sustained efforts by the Regional Committee to address the border dispute involving Assam’s Dhemaji district and the Lower Siang and East Siang districts of Arunachal Pradesh. Under the guidance of the central leadership and following multiple rounds of dialogue, both states have made notable progress in narrowing differences. The deliberations marked another forward step in this direction, concluding on a constructive and positive note.

With most of the issues concerning the disputed villages resolved in earlier meetings, today’s discussion led to a uniform consensus on several of the remaining villages with unresolved matters, thereby settling several sensitive points of contention. For the few villages where issues persist, it was decided that joint field verification would be conducted in coordination with public representatives and local residents. A comprehensive report based on these findings will be submitted within the next two months to enable a timely and lasting resolution.

The meeting saw the presence of Assam Cabinet Minister Ranoj Pegu, Member of Parliament Pradan Baruah, MLA Bhuban Pegu, Dhemaji District Commissioner & Member Secretary of Regional Committee Rahul Suresh Javir, and members of the Assam Regional Committee. From Arunachal Pradesh, MLA Tojir Kadu, Deputy Speaker of the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly Kardo Nyigyor, District Commissioner and Member Secretary of the Regional Committee Rujjum Rakshap, along with other senior officials and representatives of the Arunachal Pradesh Regional Committee, also attended the meeting.
