Assam animator among finalists at WAVE Summit 2025, signalling N’s rise in global animation

Hirak Jyoti Nath, a visual storyteller from Assam, has been named one of the 42 finalists in the Animation Filmmakers Competition (AFC) at the upcoming WAVE Summit 2025 in Mumbai. His animated short, Tales From the Tea House, is among the top 18 short films selected for the prestigious event, highlighting the rising talent from Northeast India in the global animation scene.
Organized by Dancing Atoms Studios in partnership with the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, the AFC is part of the ‘Create in India Challenge – Season 1’. It received hundreds of submissions across traditional animation, VFX, AR/VR, and virtual production. After a nine-month selection process, the final lineup includes 12 feature films, 18 short films, 9 TV/limited series, and 3 AR/VR experiences — all of which will be showcased during the WAVE Summit, May 1–4, 2025.
“Tales From the Tea House is a story from the heart of Assam’s tea gardens,” Hirak said. “It’s about quiet conversations over tea and how small moments can leave a lasting impact. I wanted to reflect that simplicity with watercolour-inspired visuals and heartfelt storytelling.”
Hirak’s selection, along with fellow finalist Khambor Batei Kharjana from Meghalaya, marks a breakthrough for the Northeast’s animation industry. Sanjib Parashar, a lecturer at Dr Bhupen Hazarika Regional Government Film & Television Institute, called it “a pivotal moment” for the region. “Our local stories have universal resonance. We’re on the brink of a creative revolution.”
The recognition comes as the global animation industry surges — with short films alone generating around $20 billion annually and educational animation expected to grow to $70 billion by 2032. Platforms like WAVE Summit are vital in bringing fresh regional voices into global conversations.
Hirak is currently seeking funding, mentorship, and partnerships to fully realize Tales From the Tea House. His participation at WAVE offers not just exposure, but the chance to collaborate with distributors, buyers, and fellow creators — a key step in cementing India’s presence in global animation storytelling.
