ASPF flags NEHU recruitment lapses, urges regularisation of Garo staff at Tura Campus

The A•chik State Peoples’ Front (ASPF) has formally lodged a complaint with the Vice-Chancellor of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong, alleging irregularities in recruitment processes and delayed regularisation of local Garo employees at the Tura Campus.
In a letter addressed to the university, ASPF General Secretary Bernita Marak highlighted procedural lapses in the recruitment of Deputy Registrar and Assistant Registrar positions. According to the organisation, the 2022 recruitment process saw a large number of eligible candidates screened, but no interviews were conducted, raising questions about transparency and fairness. Similarly, the 2024 recruitment notification for multiple non-teaching posts has yet to see the publication of shortlisted candidates.
ASPF emphasised that these delays and procedural gaps have adversely affected local employment opportunities. A significant number of Garo employees at Tura Campus continue to work in temporary or contractual positions without regularisation, which the organisation says undermines morale and job security.
The group also stressed the importance of appointing local Garo officers to senior administrative posts. According to the letter, having Deputy Registrars and Assistant Registrars from the local community ensures better cultural and linguistic understanding, effective grievance redressal, and stronger engagement with students, parents, and local authorities.
The organisation has urged NEHU to clarify the reasons behind the skipped interviews in 2022, publish the shortlist for 2024 recruitments promptly, ensure transparent recruitment procedures, prioritise qualified local candidates for senior posts, and regularise eligible Garo employees.
ASPF warned that failure to address these issues could lead to public action, including media campaigns, peaceful demonstrations, and escalation to the Ministry of Education.
