Ashadeep, a pioneering mental health organization from Northeast India, has been awarded the 28th Mahaveer Award for Excellence in the Sphere of Community and Social Service. The honour recognizes over two decades of Ashadeep’s dedicated work in mental health care, rehabilitation, and community empowerment in one of India’s most underserved regions.

The award was presented in Chennai during a ceremony attended by Union Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya. Founding members Mukul Goswami and Dr. Anjana Goswami accepted the award on behalf of the organization.

Instituted by the Bhagwan Mahaveer Foundation, the Mahaveer Awards are among the most prestigious civilian honors in India, celebrating humanitarian work across sectors like education, medicine, and social service. The award jury is chaired by former Chief Justice of India MN Venkatachaliah.

Ashadeep has led numerous initiatives, including residential rehabilitation for individuals with mental illness, community-based mental health outreach, and programs supporting homeless individuals and those with intellectual disabilities. The organization has also been instrumental in raising awareness and shaping policy for inclusive mental health care in the region.

Dr. Anjana Goswami remarked, “This recognition reaffirms our belief that compassionate, community-led care is key to breaking the stigma and ensuring recovery for people living with mental illness. We dedicate this award to all the individuals and families who walk this journey with us.”

Ashadeep’s national recognition marks a turning point for mental health visibility in the Northeast. It is expected to spark broader awareness, stronger collaborations, and new initiatives in the field of community mental health across India.
