Arunachal Dy CM urges new MLAs to embrace continuous learning, strengthen legislative practice

Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein on Thursday urged newly elected legislators to embrace continuous learning and deepen their understanding of governance. Addressing the inaugural session of a two-day orientation programme at the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly (APLA), Mein emphasized that effective lawmaking begins with informed and engaged lawmakers.
Speaking to eight MLAs attending the session, Mein highlighted the crucial responsibility legislators hold in representing both their constituencies and the broader interests of the state. He described the Assembly as the cornerstone of democratic governance, where aspirations are shaped into policy through rigorous debate and legislation.
“As policymakers, legislators must constantly upgrade their knowledge and skills to serve the people better,” he said. Mein, the senior-most member of the Assembly, urged the participants to become well-versed in legislative procedures, including drafting substantive questions and private member resolutions.
He also called for drawing inspiration from the institution’s legacy, especially the foundational work of its first Speaker, Nokmey Namati, to understand the evolution of democratic governance in Arunachal Pradesh.
The orientation programme is being hosted by APLA in collaboration with the Parliamentary Research and Training Institute for Democracies (PRIDE) and the Lok Sabha Secretariat. Mein commended APLA Speaker Tesam Pongte, Deputy Speaker Kardo Nyigyor, PRIDE Director Prashant Kumar Mallick, and senior officials from the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha Secretariats for organizing what he described as a much-needed initiative to enhance legislative effectiveness.
Also present at the event were ministers, MLAs, APLA Secretary Tadar Meena, and senior officials from both Houses of Parliament.
