Arunachal Deputy CM urges stronger GST compliance, reviews tax and revenue performance

Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, who also oversees the Finance, Tax, Excise & Narcotics portfolio, chaired a review meeting with key officials on Thursday to assess the performance of the Department of Tax, Excise & Narcotics. The focus was on improving GST compliance, boosting revenue collection, and streamlining administrative operations.
Mein emphasized the need to bring all eligible businesses—especially hotels, restaurants, and resorts—within the GST fold. He directed the department to step up registration drives and collaborate with the Arunachal Chamber of Commerce & Industries (ACCI) to conduct awareness and outreach campaigns.
The Deputy CM stressed the importance of holding monthly performance reviews to monitor compliance and revenue trends. He highlighted the role of GST in unifying the indirect tax system and creating a more efficient, transparent, and integrated national market.
Since adopting GST on July 1, 2017, Arunachal Pradesh has seen a significant rise in its taxpayer base, from 7,365 in FY 2017–18 to 18,477 in the current fiscal, a growth of nearly 151%. GST collections have also risen sharply—from Rs 227.94 crore in 2017–18 to Rs 1,825.87 crore in 2024–25.

In the Excise sector, revenue for 2024–25 reached Rs 299.36 crore, marking a 46.62% increase from the previous year.
To support taxpayers and improve service delivery, the department has launched 16 GST Seva Kendras across key locations in the state. These centres are equipped with biometric verification systems, ensuring secure and verified registrations through Aadhaar-based authentication and physical premise checks.
Mein reiterated the state government’s commitment to modernising tax infrastructure, strengthening transparency, and fostering a tax-compliant business environment to drive long-term economic growth.
The meeting was attended by senior officials and stakeholders, including Commissioner Y W Ringu, Commissioner Lobsang Tsering, CGST & CX Commissioner Shyam Kanu Mahanta, Advisor to DCM Captain Anupam Tangu, President ACCI Tarh Nachung, and President of Arunachal Tax Consultant Federation Tarak Eha.
