In a bold shift from traditional river festivals, Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein launched Nadi Utsav 2025 at Namsai on Tuesday, focusing on conservation over consumption. Instead of fishing, the event emphasized replenishing aquatic life—marked by the release of 30,000 fingerlings into the Marua, Teang, and Namtenga rivers.

The released species included both commercially important fish such as Rohu, Catla, Mrigal, Grass Carp, Labeo Gonius, and Labeo Kalbasu, as well as endangered local freshwater species like Pavi, Pahum, and Palao. The initiative aims to restore the riverine ecosystem and protect the region’s biodiversity.

Addressing the crowd, Mein emphasized the need to expand the effort to more rivers in the coming phases. He urged village heads and community leaders to take the lead in conservation, calling on youth to act as guardians of forests and rivers to curb illegal hunting and fishing.

To strengthen enforcement, the Deputy CM announced the deployment of Flying Squads and speed boats to patrol river sites 24/7. He warned that anyone caught dumping garbage or engaging in illegal fishing activities would face strict action under the law.

The event also included an environmental awareness campaign and the planting of tree saplings under the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” initiative to promote green cover.

Recognizing Arunachal Pradesh as part of the world’s 12th biodiversity hotspot, Mein underscored the importance of preserving its natural heritage. He also addressed the issue of youth drug abuse, pledging support for de-addiction and rehabilitation centres, and appealed to monks and spiritual leaders to help guide young people toward productive paths.

The campaign saw strong participation despite the intense heat, drawing in community leaders, government officials, monks, party workers, and citizens of all ages. Dignitaries present included MLA Zingnu Namchoom, ZPC Nang Urmila Mancheykhun, ADC Kalyani Namchoom, ADC K Tikhak, SP Sange Thinley, and senior Buddhist monks from the Arunachal Pradesh Bhikkhu Sangha and Kongmu Kham monastery.
