KHLIEHRIAT: The Khasi Jaintia National Union (KJNU) Central Body today demanded the arrest of the unidentified persons engaged in illegal collection of moneys from trucks in front of Umkiang Patrolling Post (PP) and to punish them under relevant section of extortion.

The KJNU made the demand in a firsthand information report to the Officer in Charge of Lumshnong Police Station this afternoon.

They stated that Umkiang PP under Lumshnong PS , East Jaintia Hills is located at the border of Meghalaya and Assam and the last police set up of Meghalaya before crossing over to Assam or the first Police set up of Meghalaya while crossing over from Assam to Meghalaya.

It is located along the National Highway connecting the state of Meghalaya to rest of North Eastern States such as Assam and Mizoram and, being a National Highway, thousand of vehicles ranging from LMV to HMV and other types ply daily.

According to the  FIR, , it has however been observed that some unidentified persons in civil dress are openly collecting money from trucks in front of Umkiang PP over the past several weeks in a board day light as well illegally.

They flayed that it is shocking to observe that the police personnel posted in the said PP do not take any action against the persons collecting money from the trucks and obviously illegally.

“That, the silent of the said PP over the illegal collection of money mean consent and it imply two things either they are hand in gloves with them or they are not present in their place of posting and are not performing their duty,” the KJNU said.

The act of illegal collection of money has disgraced the people of Meghalaya and especially the Meghalaya Police as it the first police set up of Meghalaya while coming from Assam etc and as the saying goes the first impression is the last impression, they asserted.

The copy of the FIR was also forwarded to the Deputy Commissioner, East Jaintia Hills District and the Superintendent of Police, East Jaintia Hills District for necessary actions.
