As part of the ongoing District Level Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, an awareness programme was held on June 12 at Kiang Nangbah Government College, Jowai. The event was organised by the office of the District Social Welfare Officer (DSWO), Jowai, under the theme “A National Movement Towards a Drug-Free India.”

Y Najiar, DSWO, in her introductory speech, highlighted the growing concern of drug abuse, particularly among the youth. She stressed that the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan is not merely a government initiative but a collective national responsibility. “Every citizen has a role to play in securing the future of our country,” she said.

Encouraging the students to lead drug-free lives, she urged them to become role models and agents of change in their schools, communities, and society. “Your voice has the power to raise awareness, inspire others, and create lasting impact,” she added.

    F. Passah, Assistant Legal Aid Defence Counsel from the District Legal Services Authority, spoke about the legal framework surrounding drug abuse in India. He elaborated on the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, and its connection to the Indian Constitution. Emphasising compassion, he noted, “Addiction should be treated as a health issue, not merely a legal one—those affected need help, not just punishment.”

Chibait Langtang, Taekwondo athlete and Brand Ambassador of the District-Level Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, inspired the students by sharing his journey in martial arts. He encouraged the youth to pursue strength and discipline through sports and to choose health over harmful habits.

Barry L. Kharmalki, General Secretary of the Meghalaya State Network of Positive People (MSNP+), Shillong, shared his powerful story of struggle, recovery, and transformation. “I lost my way, but I found the strength to come back,” he said. As a positive role model, he urged students to make wise choices, stay away from harmful influences, and believe in their own strength.
